Electronic Security

In March 2011 East Stoke became the first village in the country to win the “Secured by Design” award. Nearly £50,000 has been spent in a bid to make the village in Nottinghamshire the first crime-free place in the county. All the residents of East Stoke were offered burglar alarms and extra locks and the whole village is now covered by CCTV.

Work began in 2008 after the residents became concerned with the increased crime rate in the area. In the three years since then 12 state-ofthe- art CCTV cameras covering the whole of the village, three of which have automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology, have been installed to create a safer environment for the people who live there.

When the project was first initiated in 2008, the goal was very simple: reduce crime. In order to fulfill their requirements, East Stoke needed to find the right installation partner and so they spoke to AIS Total Security Ltd.

East Stoke briefed in AIS Total Security and told them they wanted to have a CCTV system that covered the busy A46 road between Nottingham and Newark and all of the side roads in the village. The system would require ANPR technology and overview cameras as well as standard static cameras.

Setting up the cameras was relatively simple, the main challenge that the project faced came from ensuring that the images could be easily viewed by selected village residents and the local police authority. The video streams would need to be transmitted over a long distance and had to work reliably. AIS Total Security needed to find a wireless, mesh networking system that would ensure reliable delivery of the video streams and be easy for the viewers to manage at the end point.

The Fluidmesh range of products seemed to offer an ideal solution that met the specific requirements.

Mayflex, a distributor of infrastructure, networking and electronic security products, was recommended to AIS Total Security as an ideal partner to help them. Mayflex not only supplies a range of security products, including Fluidmesh, but also provides dedicated service and support throughout the whole project life.

Chris Lawson, Field Security Account Manager from Mayflex, visited East Stoke with AIS Total Security to gain a better understanding of the requirements. The full installation design was presented to him and he could quickly see that Fluidmesh would indeed be the perfect solution for their long distance transmission requirements. Chris recommended the FM2200 wireless mesh networking product.

The Fluidmesh 2200 is the only wireless mesh networking product designed and manufactured specifically for video-surveillance applications. The Fluidmesh 2200 series not only transmits the video streams coming from the cameras directly attached to it, but also dynamically routes packets coming from other Fluidmesh units through the optimal path.

Fluidmesh 2200 APs take advantage of two radios simultaneously, operating one radio in the 2.4GHz and the other one in the 5GHz range. The dual radio configuration provides optimal data rate throughput and enhanced reliability essential for IP based video surveillance applications.

Fluidmesh’s range of products can reach up to 100mbps at 6 miles. The units support all topologies which consist of point to point, point to multipoint and true mesh, and they can be mixed on the same system or network and protect the end user’s investment for the life of the project. The products provide true quality of service, and can intelligently prioritise between different elements, like telemetry, VoIP and video streams. All the products also have the FM Quadro tool included in the units for set up, diagnostics and real time network performance monitoring. This means that there is no need to load software on to the PCs.

Chris Lawson comments, “The great thing about Fluidmesh is the long distance that you can transmit over. It makes things possible that other products could never. It was a perfect solution for East Stoke and has made the CCTV system that they really needed truly usable and reliable.”

The system installation ran very smoothly and efficiently and was completed in March 2011. The village residents now feel safe and the use of the Fluidmesh 2200 has meant that the relevant people can view the footage as and when needed at their remote location.
